Nicolas Cage says he is “currently a little bit homeless” after a sinkhole damaged his Malibu home, and he has been living in hotels while repairs are planned.

The 62-year-old actor shared the update during an appearance at Los Angeles Comic Con on Saturday, October 31, while talking about his Halloween plans. He said his house in Malibu was damaged in September and he has not been able to move back in since.

“I’m currently a little bit homeless,” Cage told the audience. “Something happened to my house in Malibu, so I’m just sort of living in hotels.”

What happened to Nicolas Cage’s Malibu home?

The trouble started on September 8, 2026, when a large sinkhole opened along Sea Level Drive in Malibu, outside Cage’s oceanfront home. The collapse swallowed part of the driveway and damaged the road, leaving the small beachfront neighbourhood cut off and unsafe.

The home, near Lechuza Beach, is worth about $10.5 million. Cage bought the property in 2024. The collapse also broke a gas main, causing a leak that brought emergency crews to the scene in the early hours of the morning.

Reports at the time linked the damage to severe coastal erosion and heavy rain from Tropical Storm Marie, which battered the California coast that week. The house was empty and appeared to be under renovation when the ground gave way.

Why he is still living in hotels

Nearly two months after the sinkhole opened, Cage says he still cannot return home. He has filed permits for emergency work to protect the property, including work to hold back the sea with sandbags and stop further erosion, but there is no confirmed date for his return.

The road outside the house remains the main problem. Until the access route and the surrounding ground are made safe, the home stays out of reach, and the actor’s hotel stay looks set to continue.

Cage did not say the main house itself had been destroyed. The damage reported so far centres on the driveway, the garage area and the road, but the full repair job and its timeline are still unclear.

As Just Jared reported, the actor spoke about his situation while answering a question about his Halloween plans at the convention. Parade also covered the actor’s hotel stay and the September damage to the property.

A different Halloween for his daughter

The living situation also changed how Cage spent Halloween with his young daughter, August, 4, whom he shares with his wife, Riko Shibata.

Instead of welcoming trick-or-treaters at his Malibu home, Cage said he planned to take August trick-or-treating in Santa Monica. After she went to bed, he hoped to watch Stanley Kubrick’s horror classic The Shining.

It was a small detail, but it showed how much the sinkhole has disrupted everyday family life, not just the property itself.

What is next for Nicolas Cage?

Cage has stayed busy on screen despite the disruption at home. He starred in the horror hit Longlegs in 2024 and led the series Spider-Noir, which held its world premiere in New York in May 2026.

He also has new films on the way, including Fortitude, a Second World War spy film, and Parish, an apocalyptic drama. For now, though, his focus at home is on the repair work in Malibu — and on when he can finally move back in.

Why the story struck a chord

Cage is one of Hollywood’s most recognisable actors, with a career spanning more than four decades. He won the Academy Award for Best Actor for Leaving Las Vegas in 1995 and has moved between big-budget blockbusters and small independent films ever since, from National Treasure and Face/Off to Pig and Dream Scenario.

He has also been open about money troubles in the past. In 2009 he lost a fortune once estimated at $135 million, and he has since rebuilt his career with a steady run of film work. That history is part of why his “a little bit homeless” line travelled so far: fans know he is not short of work, but the sinkhole has still left him without a home to go back to.

The Malibu coastline has a long record of erosion and storm damage, and Sea Level Drive is a private road in a gated community next to Lechuza Beach. The sinkhole did not only affect Cage. It cut off access for the whole small neighbourhood, and the city tied the lifting of evacuation orders to a finding that conditions are safe again.

For now, the actor is waiting on engineers and permits like his neighbours. His Halloween may have been spent in a hotel, but the bigger question — when the road and the house are safe — still has no answer.
